Abstract:
The applications of drones in military, delivery, but most essentially, in everyday life of many ordinary people, make their stability a valuable topic for an increasing number of those interested in their safety and efficiency. In this paper, the general equations of linear and angular motions of a quadcopter were derived by applying the concept of cross-sectional area. Several simplified wind-drone interactions were considered to examine the capability of 1.5kg drone, which could create a maximal lift of 28N, to withstand wind. The wind speed limiting stable flight for a non-rotational situation is about 10 m/s. For rotation without tilting, the controllability breaks down between 12 m/s and 13 m/s. When staying at most 20cm from the target location, a drone was shown to withstand a downward wind of at most 1.98 m/s, in a simplified movement along the vertical axis. The last result is surprising, as it shows how different the results may be depending on the direction of the wind and the movement of the drone itself. The paper concludes with the indication of limitations, conclusions and future works.
